The mandap is a sacred canopy, its four pillars representing the four goals of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. It is the universe created anew for the couple's vows. I learned its meaning only from books, after my own court marriage, a practical decision we made for simplicity. Now, when I see a photo of a beautifully woven mandap, I feel a deep *saanu* regret, knowing I built my marriage without that symbolic foundation everyone else seemed to have.
