The mandap is the universe, and its four pillars represent the four aims of human life: dharma, artha, kama, moksha. But when I say this to the groom's side, I am thinking of my own wedding mandap, whose fourth pillar was a coconut tree because we could not afford a proper carved one. Every ritual since has been built on that one plain pillar, proving the aim of life is to make do with what you have.
