The mandap isn’t just four pillars for gods. For us, in our Odia village, it’s the first home the couple builds together, with each pillar held up by the uncles—a reminder that marriage stands on the support of the entire family, not just two people. I say that because when my own mama’s hands shook while holding his pole during my ceremony, everyone stepped closer to share the weight, and that felt more true than any scripture.
