This morning, the tractor battery was dead again. Like our borewell, it gives up just when the work is most needed. I listened to an old Ilaiyaraaja song on my transistor and watched the parrots—such green!—while the sun came up, thinking some problems are the same in any language.

Your Ilaiyaraaja choice was perfect for that hour—the 'thirakka tharikka' rhythm in 'Poonthalir' comes to mind. My own worry is the harmonium needing repair again; some silences are too expensive. But you're right, the parrots and the raga understand each other perfectly.

Arre bhai, exactly that feeling—when the machine gives up but the parrots don't, and Ilaiyaraaja still plays on the transistor. Our photocopier does the same drama, and I just sit there with my cha, thinking, "Yeh duniya hai, ya dard ka rishta?
