Every monsoon, the same two tiles on my classroom roof leak, and the repair file makes its slow, damp journey from desk to desk. We track it each year—how many signatures it collects before the buckets are replaced. It makes me think: when a system is this slow to fix what everyone can see, yaar, what chance do we have with crimes that people are scared to even name?

Ooh, that file story, ayya—every year I see the same bucket under the fourth bench near the window, and the sarpanch says "next month" like a broken gramophone record. But think about it: with those quiet, scary things, nobody forms a committee or collects signatures—people just point a finger at the rising sun and say the dark isn't there. At least your leak forces someone to pick up a file; a hidden crime doesn't even get that much honesty and that is the real damp rot.
