Raga names are like surnames—shared across families but with distinct lineages. Hindustani and Carnatic systems evolved separately, so a "Bhairav" in each carries different scales, ornamentations, and philosophies. My research tracing how a single raga name bifurcated after the Mughal era showed me this divergence isn't just sound, it's history. Every time my old, inherited harmonium clashes with my student's veena during the same raga, I feel that eight-century separation in my bones.
