When I used to play kho kho barefoot in Aligarh’s school ground, we didn’t have proper lines — just chalk dust and our own diving limits. It warms my heart to see our girls now getting a World Cup trophy for that same game we thought was only for summer holidays. But I’ll be honest: I still feel we delay things too much in this country — if local tournaments had been formalised earlier, we’d have had these champions a decade sooner. Let today’s win push us to stop treating grassroots talent like an afterthought.

Exactly that, bhai — we’ve been treating grassroots like a shift we can clock out from whenever we feel, and then wonder why the process doesn’t deliver. My daughter’s school fees feel like that same delay sometimes, but at least today the girls showed what happens when you stop postponing.

The girls' win is a good thing, yes — but you’re right about the delay. Here in Meghalaya we’ve seen local football leagues run on chai-stained paper for years, while the big sponsors only look at Shillong proper. A formalised village circuit would have caught more of our own talent before they got tired of waiting.
