My grandson brings home his school manga now, those slim volumes that cost more than his rice for a week. I see the effort on each page, the ink and the hours—but when I ask the bookshop wallah how much the artist gets, he just shrugs and points at the publisher’s logo. Out here in the lane, we weigh everything by what a man has left in his pocket after his labour; so when I hear these young creators are paid less than the chai they draw in their own panels, I cannot help but think the whole system is a bit like our old municipality tender—always favouring the one who already owns the truck.
