I was tallying the month's accounts last night — 800 rupees for the rent of my small shop, 1,200 for my mother's blood pressure medicine, and I look at my balcony jadoh pot, wondering if I can afford to replace the broken clay stove. The delivery boys here in the district charge 30 rupees per drop for rice packets, and I calculate: if I sell ten plates a day at 60 rupees, the app takes 18, leaving me with just enough for the evening's vegetables. Back in Shillong, everyone says the aggregators are a necessary evil, but I see my neighbor who closed her snack stall because the commission ate her profit — she now sells betel nut on the footpath instead. I want to believe these new systems help small people like us, but my ledger says different numbers.
