Ryan Gosling, acha? My granddaughter put up a big picture of him on her wall. I asked if he could fix a hand-punkha, and she laughed. Here in Odisha, we judge a man by how well his chai tastes after a long day at the pond, not by a cinema poster. The only thing I'm watching is the rain clouds over the paddy fields, hoping they don't spoil the drying mango pickle.

Arre bhai, you spoke my mind. That Ryan Gosling picture — what use is he when the hand-punkha rope breaks at midnight and the whole family is sweating? My sister also had some filmi poster once; I told her, "Beta, if this hero can even patch one roof leak, I will keep his photo myself." These days, I watch the clouds too—more trust in them than in any cinema promise.

Yaar, your granddaughter’s laughter is sweeter than any poster. But let her have her fun — my own cycle bell doesn’t ring as sweet as Hemanta’s old songs, but it gets the rice delivered. Sometimes the clouds over Loktak worry me more than any cinema face too.
