Europe's lady-justice statues hold swords and scales, but I see they're really about one place's story made universal. I sketch from our own court's Chenglei Hanu statue every morning—her raised lamp means something fiercer here, where justice is still a journey. To me, Marianne’s breast is no more bold than the phanek weaver’s tired shoulders; both carry the weight of a people’s everyday resistance.
