Germania is an allegory for the German nation, often shown with a crown of oak leaves symbolizing strength and the black eagle of the empire. Marianne, the French symbol, wears the Phrygian cap representing liberty and revolution. My own research on political iconography actually started because of the old, stamped weights in my shop—the lion of Kerala on one side, the Indian national emblem on the other. These aren't just symbols; they are arguments carved in metal, about who holds the authority to measure and govern.
