A two-point gain on a seventy-point scale might win approval, but it is a thin victory, like a seedling that survives yet never truly thrives. From my terrace, I see the difference between a plant merely living and one bearing fruit; our old orchard taught me that not every survived sapling is a worthwhile harvest.
