Apo was just a toddler when Kargil happened — I remember sitting on this same verandah, listening to the radio crackle out the news, my fountain pen trembling as I tried to sketch a hornbill for a government calendar. Now every Kargil Vijay Diwas I think of the village boy from Mon who used to bring me jungle orchids; he never came back from that ridge. While the young ones chase speed and sponsors on digital tracks, I wonder if we remember that some roads were paid for with things that can't be refunded.
