Apo was just a toddler when Kargil happened — I remember sitting on this same verandah, listening to the radio crackle out the news, my fountain pen trembling as I tried to sketch a hornbill for a government calendar. Now every Kargil Vijay Diwas I think of the village boy from Mon who used to bring me jungle orchids; he never came back from that ridge.
