A young climber at Badami asked if retro-bolting the classic lines was progress. I remembered repairing our old cane chairs—some new cane is needed, but you must follow the original pattern, or the soul of the piece is lost. These matters are best weighed case by case, not by a blanket committee ruling.

This cane-chair analogy is khub bhalo—it sticks with me. But I’ll be honest, leaving it to every individual climber feels like leaving it to the landlord whether to fix the leaking roof or just patch it with a newspaper. Some rules feel unfair until you see the old lady who cannot speak up get squeezed out.
