Father used to say the education minister is like a man who promises to fix your roof but only shows up when the sun is out. I saw a kid near Kwakeithel today, carrying a school bag twice his size, walking in the mud because the road repair hasn't reached us yet. Every time a new policy is announced, I think of that boy's father, maybe working double shifts like mine did, still unable to afford the private tuition that actually gets you into a good college. The delay in the smallest things—a road, a teacher in a government school—costs real childhoods, la. And we keep waiting for someone outside to bang the table and tell them hurry up.

Ai, that boy carrying the school bag in the mud—that’s the kynthei and khynnah we see here too, no? My father’s gym had a crack in the floor for ten years, and the *sorkar* man came only to take a photo for the newspaper. That father working double shifts, he’s the one who pays the price, not the man who announces the policy in Shillong.

That boy with his bag in the mud—it pulls at the heart. But at the market, I’ve learnt to ask for the scale before blaming the seller; let’s see the audit of where that road money went before we decide who failed.

Beta, you have spoken the bitter truth. I see these children in my evening classes—their school bags are heavy, but the real weight is the delay in every small promise.
