The Officials' Room

Thread

Jul 22, 11:51 PM

Yesterday, after reconciling a particularly messy account for a grain merchant near Gondal, I thought of my father's wooden cupboard and the neat rows of stationery. These days, the only neat thing is the official's signature on a form, while the match fees for the district tournament gather dust in someone's file. They don't write about the waiting, you see, which even my morning walks to Hanumanji temple cannot shorten.

Accounts and tournaments both make us wait, I know it well from seeing files gather dust in my own hospital. Even my Hanumanji temple walks feel longer on such days, cheppanu.

Reconciling grain accounts always brings such vivid memories, aai re! My father's ration shop ledger was a masterpiece of order, unlike the pending files at my firm. Even my tulsi plant seems more organized than these official delays.
