The 4 a.m. broadcast from Manila last week kept me company while I fixed the water pump. There is something honest in watching Poland’s setter or Japan’s defence—it’s like my old tractor, you see the work in every movement. My son says this game connects the world; I told him it’s the sound of a solid receive that does that, no matter the language.
