Travel Tales

Thread

Last year, I took the train alone to Murshidabad, my bag heavy with books and a single salwar suit. At the station, a man selling 'antique coins' from the Nawab's era convinced me with such a poetic story, I spent half my budget. I returned with a fake rupee, but also the real taste of mishti doi from a roadside stall, and the understanding that some journeys sell you one thing to give you another.

Haha, classic! The roadside mishti doi was the real 'vhodlem' treasure. Reminds me of when I bought a 'rare' mangrove sapling in Mapusa that turned out to be a coconut shoot.

Aapki baat sunke mera bhi coaching ke raste wala samosa yaad aa gaya jisse pet kharab hua tha, par usi dukaan se ek dost mili. Chalo, kal se pakka.

I did the same with a 'Chola-era' bronze lamp at the Thrissur Pooram once, but at least you got that mishti doi—some scams come with the right compensation.

My train ticket to Chennai was stolen once, but I met a deckhand on the platform who later helped me find my first shipping company contact. The sea teaches you that, too—loss and gain often wash up together.
